Helmets Went On Friday. Here Is the Road From First Practice to Friday Night Lights in the Purchase.

The short version: Kentucky high school football practice opened July 10. Shoulder pads are allowed July 22, full contact August 1, and the first game window runs August 17-22, which makes Friday, August 21 the first full Friday night of the season. Forty-one days from today. And the practices your dad remembers are now, formally, against the rules.

The dead period ended at midnight Thursday. By Friday morning, helmets were on at fields from Paducah to Murray to Mayfield, because July 10 was the state association's first legal day of football practice for 2026. Every fall sport follows this week: everything else can start practicing Wednesday, July 15.

From here the season arrives on a fixed ladder, and it is worth pinning to the fridge.

Helmets first, pads later, games in August. Kentucky phases football contact in three steps, per the state association's 2026-27 planning calendar: helmets only from July 10, shoulder pads (shells) from July 22, and full gear from August 1. The first-contest window for football is August 17-22, teams play a maximum of 10 regular-season games, and the playoffs run four straight November weekends into the state finals December 4-5 at Kroger Field in Lexington.

That ladder covers a lot of Friday nights. Tilghman, McCracken County, Murray, Calloway County, Marshall County, Mayfield, Graves County, Ballard Memorial, Fulton County and the rest of the Purchase schools all step off the same rungs.

The drills are. Three days before helmets went on, the association put out new contact-practice guidance built on a national safety task force, and it reads like the end of an era. Drills to be "totally ELIMINATED" include the Oklahoma Drill, Bull in the Ring, King of the Circle, board drills, and head-on tackling drills from more than four yards apart.

The stated intent, in the association's words: "to minimize risk and to reduce closing speeds in football contact drills and unnecessary helmet-to-helmet contact in football practice."

If you played ball in Kentucky any time in the last fifty years, you ran some of those drills, and you can probably still hear the whistle that started them. Your kid will not run them. The state read the injury data and retired a whole generation's shared memory in one memo, and honestly, most of the men who lived those drills will tell you the memory is better than the drill ever was.

Because the calendar puts the most dangerous week in the hottest month. Separate heat-stroke guidance issued the same day calls exertional heat stroke the leading cause of preventable death in high school football, and the numbers behind it are blunt: all of the sport's high school heat-stroke deaths have come in conditioning sessions, 97 percent of them linemen, nearly all in the first week of practice.

That week is this week, in a West Kentucky July. Kentucky law already requires schools to rehearse emergency action plans with rapid-cooling procedures. If you drive past a practice field and see a cold tub on the sideline at 8 am, that is the rulebook working.

Thursday, August 27, under the lights at home. Murray State released kickoff times Friday: the opener against Eastern Illinois goes at 6 pm on Rudolph Family Field at Roy Stewart Stadium, the same stadium getting the new Draffen Family Founders Club we covered when the $2.25 million gift landed.

The home slate: Eastern Illinois (Aug 27), Valparaiso for Family Weekend and Salute to Service (Sep 12, 6 pm), Southern Illinois to open Valley play (Sep 26, 6 pm), South Dakota State for Homecoming (Oct 17, 4 pm), Youngstown State (Nov 7, 1 pm), and Northern Iowa on Senior Day (Nov 21, 1 pm). Homecoming against the Jackrabbits, one of the sport's ruling programs, is the circle-it date.

Forty-one days reads like a long time until you remember what the other end of it feels like. A parking lot filling up while the sun is still mean, the band running the fight song one more time behind the field house, somebody's little brother chasing a loose ball under the bleachers. The ladder is just dates. That is what the dates are for.
